Assolutamente spettacolare! Spero ti diverta!

Splendido "campo" proprio sul Dart. Posso immaginare che sia affollato in estate.

    faq

Are there specific family-friendly walks suitable for children at Spitchwick Common?

Yes, Spitchwick Common is an excellent starting point for family-friendly walks. The large, grassy expanse itself is ideal for picnics and play. For walks, the paths along the River Dart are generally gentle and suitable for families. While the intro mentions komoot offers routes, you can find many easy, flat sections perfect for younger children, especially those staying close to the riverbank. For slightly older children, exploring towards the Dart Gorge offers more adventure with varied terrain.

What is the typical terrain and difficulty of walks around Spitchwick Common?

The terrain immediately around Spitchwick Common is largely flat and grassy, making it easy for casual strolls. However, walks extending into the wider Dartmoor National Park, such as sections of the Two Moors Way or routes exploring nearby tors, can involve more varied terrain, including uneven paths, inclines, and potentially muddy sections, especially after rain. These longer routes would be considered moderate in difficulty.

Are there any notable landmarks or viewpoints near Spitchwick Common worth visiting?

Absolutely. Beyond the common itself, the stunning Dart Gorge upstream offers beautiful views and dramatic scenery. On the far side of the river bend, cliffs rise, providing a picturesque backdrop. Further afield, the Spitchwick Common Tor, located west of Babeny, features large granite boulders and caves, offering an interesting exploration for those willing to venture a bit further.

What are the parking options for Spitchwick Common, and is public transport available?

The main parking area is near New Bridge. However, visitor tips consistently highlight that parking can be extremely challenging, especially on hot days and weekends, as the car park fills up quickly. Arriving early is strongly recommended. Public transport options directly to Spitchwick Common are limited due to its rural location within Dartmoor National Park. Visitors typically rely on private vehicles.

How crowded does Spitchwick Common get on weekends, and what are quieter times to visit?

Spitchwick Common can get extremely crowded on hot days and weekends, as noted by visitors. If you prefer a more serene experience, visiting during weekdays, especially outside of school holidays, or arriving early in the morning on weekends, is advisable. The intro also suggests that visiting during quieter times allows for a more peaceful appreciation of the natural surroundings.

Is Spitchwick Common dog-friendly, and are there any specific rules for dogs?

Spitchwick Common is generally dog-friendly, making it a popular spot for dog walkers. However, as it's within Dartmoor National Park and often has livestock grazing nearby, it's crucial to keep dogs under close control, preferably on a lead, especially during lambing season or when near farm animals. Always clean up after your dog to help maintain the natural beauty of the area.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options close to Spitchwick Common?

Spitchwick Common is in a relatively rural part of Dartmoor. While there are no direct amenities on the common itself, nearby villages and towns like Ashburton offer a range of cafes, pubs, and accommodation options. It's recommended to bring your own refreshments for your visit to the common, especially if planning a picnic.

What should I wear for a walk at Spitchwick Common, considering the weather conditions?

Given Dartmoor's often unpredictable weather, it's best to dress in layers. Even on sunny days, conditions can change quickly. Comfortable walking shoes or boots are recommended, especially if you plan to explore beyond the grassy common onto more rugged trails. A waterproof jacket is always a good idea, regardless of the forecast, and sun protection is essential on clear days.

Are there any alternatives to Spitchwick Common if I'm looking for a less crowded riverside spot?

While Spitchwick Common is unique, Dartmoor National Park offers many other beautiful riverside spots along the River Dart and its tributaries. Exploring areas slightly further upstream or downstream from the main popular spots can often lead to quieter, equally picturesque locations. Researching other access points to the Dart within the national park might reveal suitable alternatives for a more secluded experience.

Can I still go wild swimming or cliff jumping at Spitchwick Common?

No. It is crucial to note that there is a recent ban on wild swimming and camping at Spitchwick Common. This restriction has been implemented to protect the delicate environment and wildlife of the River Dart. While historically popular for these activities, visitors must now adhere to these rules to help preserve the area's natural beauty.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see at Spitchwick Common?

Spitchwick Common, being part of Dartmoor National Park, is rich in wildlife. Along the River Dart, you might spot various bird species, including dippers and grey wagtails. The surrounding woodlands are home to woodland birds and small mammals. Keep an eye out for Dartmoor ponies and sheep grazing on the common and surrounding moorland. Respecting the natural habitat and keeping a distance is key to enjoying wildlife spotting.
