What is the historical significance of the Parish and Priory Church of St John the Baptist, Royston?

The church boasts a rich history dating back to around 1162 when it began as a chapel, later expanding into an Augustinian priory. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536, the townspeople of Royston purchased the building, preventing its demolition and establishing it as the Parish Church in 1540. This act highlights its enduring importance to the community and its continuous role as a spiritual center for centuries.

What unique architectural features can be found at the church?

As a Grade I listed building, the church showcases a blend of architectural styles. Key features include its 13th-century nave and aisles, which were originally part of the Augustinian Priory. The great west tower, built in the 1480s in the Perpendicular style, is particularly notable for its unusual oriel window at the ringing chamber level. Inside, visitors can admire a medieval octagonal font, 15th-century carved stone figures, and a richly carved 15th-century wooden pulpit and lectern.

The church has undergone significant restoration, and efforts have been made to improve accessibility. While the terrain immediately around the church is generally flat, it's advisable to contact the church directly for the most current information regarding wheelchair access and specific facilities, especially after its reopening in 2023 following the 2018 fire.

Where can I find parking when visiting the church?
