L'otarda ha preso il nome dal cavallo bianco su cui la figlia del re Brunilde fuggì dal gigante Bodo. Il cavallo saltò dalla scogliera sulla roccia opposta, il gigante Bodo cadde nel fiume e così gli diede il nome: Bode.
