Un giardino pensile si forma quando una sorgente d'acqua raggiunge uno strato di roccia impermeabile e non può più scendere verso il basso. L'acqua quindi si sposta lateralmente attraverso la roccia e una volta raggiunta la parete di un canyon, fuoriesce dalla roccia. Se c'è una sporgenza che impedisce all'acqua di evaporare rapidamente, crea un ambiente in cui le piante possono crescere sulla parete rocciosa e sul terreno sottostante.

The Hanging Gardens Trail offers a fascinating glimpse into a desert anomaly: a lush, spring-fed oasis thriving on sandstone walls amidst the arid landscape. As you hike the 1.5-mile (2.5 km) route, you'll traverse groomed paths, sandy sections, and slickrock, leading you to the vibrant 'hanging garden' itself, where maidenhair ferns and orchids flourish. This easy trail, with a minimal 59 feet (18 metres) of elevation gain, also provides stunning viewpoints of Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Dam, making it a rewarding experience for all.
Planning your visit is straightforward, as the trailhead is easily accessible near Page, Arizona, and doesn't require an entrance fee. The route is generally well-marked, but be prepared for little shade, especially during warmer months, and always carry enough water. While the main trail is easy and takes about 39 minutes, there's an optional overlook trail that adds a moderate challenge with steeper grades and uneven ground.
What makes this trail truly special is its unique ecosystem – a verdant hanging garden sustained by a seep spring within the Navajo Sandstone, a rare sight on the Colorado Plateau.
