    La roccia su cui poggia il castello fu acquistata da Meginold nel 927. In precedenza era di proprietà dell'Abbazia di Stavelot. Non si sa molto di questo periodo, solo che i discendenti di Meginold - Gottfried e Heinrich - lasciarono il castello qui costruito per partecipare alla prima crociata (1096-1099). Nel XIV secolo il castello passò dalla proprietà della famiglia e fu diviso tra tre famiglie locali: Brandenbourg, Kronenburg e Falkenstein.

    La prima testimonianza scritta dell'esistenza di Esch-sur-Sûre si trova nel "Liber aureus Epternacensis". In questo libro dell'abbazia di Echternach, si nota che un certo Nebelungus donò all'abbazia le sue proprietà con i servi di "Hesc". Questo atto risale all'anno 3 del regno di Carlo Magno, cioè tra il 9 ottobre 773 e il 9 ottobre 774.
