Topsail Hill Preserve State Park offers over 15 miles of diverse trails. You'll find paved paths suitable for cycling, including a section of the 18.4-mile Timpoochee Trail, as well as unpaved trails winding through old-growth pine forests, scrubland, and wetlands. These trails are perfect for hikers, trail runners, and birdwatchers looking to explore the park's varied ecosystems.

Are dogs allowed on the trails and in the camping areas at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park?

Yes, dogs are welcome at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, but specific rules apply. They are permitted on trails and in the RV and tent camping areas, provided they are kept on a leash no longer than six feet. However, for the protection of wildlife and visitor safety, dogs are generally not allowed on the beaches or in the dune lake areas. Always clean up after your pet.

What unique natural features or wildlife can visitors expect to see at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park?

The park is renowned for its three miles of pristine white sand beaches and impressive dunes, some reaching over 25 feet. It also features rare coastal dune lakes, which are unique freshwater bodies found close to the ocean. The diverse ecosystems support a variety of wildlife, including numerous bird species (it's part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail) and the endangered Choctawhatchee beach mouse. Keep an eye out for pitcher plants in the wetlands.

What kind of amenities does the Gregory E. Moore RV Resort offer for campers?

The Gregory E. Moore RV Resort, located within the park, is a full-service campground. It provides 156 RV sites with full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electricity, sewer, and cable television), many of which are paved and can accommodate rigs up to 45 feet. Beyond RV sites, the resort also features 22 tent sites with elevated pads, fire rings, water, and electric hookups, as well as bungalows and cabins. Resort amenities include a swimming pool, shuffleboard courts, laundry facilities, heated and cooled bathrooms with showers, a camp store, and a clubhouse.

Is Topsail Hill Preserve State Park suitable for families with young children?

Absolutely! Topsail Hill Preserve State Park is very family-friendly. Besides the beautiful beaches and gentle trails, the park offers a playground, picnic pavilions, and an amphitheater for interpretive programs. Ranger-led activities, such as campfire stories, plant walks, and wildlife discussions, are often available and can be very engaging for children. The tram service to the beach also makes access easier for families with gear or strollers.

Are there any historical points of interest within Topsail Hill Preserve State Park?

Yes, the park holds an intriguing piece of history. During World War II, the western part of the preserve served as a secret military site (C64) for testing the JB-2 missile. Visitors can still find remnants of launch tracks and concrete bunkers from this era, adding a unique historical layer to the natural beauty of the park.

What should I bring for a day trip to Topsail Hill Preserve State Park?

For a day trip, essential items include plenty of water, sunscreen, insect repellent, and comfortable walking shoes or sandals suitable for sand. If you plan to swim, bring swimwear and a towel. A hat, sunglasses, and a camera are also recommended. Don't forget any snacks or a picnic lunch, as well as cash or a card for the park entrance fee.

Are there any specific regulations for fishing in the coastal dune lakes or off the beach?

Fishing is a popular activity at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park. You can fish for bass, bream, panfish, and catfish in the rare coastal dune lakes.
