    L'edificio della chiesa, progettato da Eugène Gife, risale al 1852. Una particolarità del progetto è che i transetti non sporgono, cosa rara in questo tipo di chiese. Il coro pentagonale riceve luce attraverso sette grandi finestre. Anche se all'epoca Wechelderzande non apparteneva certo ai villaggi più ricchi della Kempen, la chiesa di Sint-Amelberga custodisce numerosi tesori d'arte.
    Il campanile protetto, alto 37 metri, è un vero gioiello del semplice gotico Kempen. Probabilmente fu costruito alla fine del XV secolo. La guglia risale al 1674-1675.

    Dal punto di vista ecclesiastico, Wechelderzande era una chiesa sussidiaria di Poederlee, che a sua volta dipendeva dalla parrocchia di Vorselaar. Nel 1321, Poederlee, insieme a Wechelderzande, fu separata da Vorselaar e nel 1572 Wechelderzande divenne una parrocchia indipendente, così come Poederlee.
    L'attuale torre fu costruita intorno al 1500 e la guglia fu rinnovata nel 1674-1675. Nel 1852, fu costruita una nuova chiesa su progetto di Eugeen Gife, mantenendo la torre. Nel 1861, fu aggiunta una finestra neogotica sopra l'ingresso.
