Thomas Becket fu arcivescovo di Canterbury e, nella disputa tra la Chiesa e la Corona (re Enrico II), un “martire del diritto canonico e della libertà della Chiesa”, come affermò papa Alessandro III. in occasione della sua canonizzazione (1173, solo tre anni dopo la morte violenta di Tommaso). La sua memoria liturgica nel calendario dei santi è il 29 dicembre.
