L'elettore Clemens Wenzeslaus fece costruire il palazzo elettorale nel 1777-1786. Dal 1850 al 1858 il principe ereditario prussiano e poi l'imperatore Guglielmo I risiedettero qui come governatore militare prussiano. Nel 1944 il Palazzo Elettorale fu distrutto fino alle mura esterne e ricostruito nel 1950/51.
