    Domande frequenti

Is the Cais da Jorna monument the same as the Fishermen's Monuments found in other countries?

No, the Cais da Jorna monument in Vila Franca de Xira, Portugal, is distinct from other 'Fishermen's Monuments' found globally, such as those in Seattle or Gloucester, USA. While all honor maritime or labor history, the Cais da Jorna specifically commemorates the 'jornaleiros' (daily workers) who gathered at the pier for employment, rather than fishermen lost at sea. It is a unique bronze sculpture by João Duarte, inaugurated in 2013, focusing on the social history of the local riverside community.

What kind of trails or routes are available around the Cais da Jorna monument?

The Cais da Jorna monument is located in an urban riverside area, making it ideal for leisurely walks and cycling. While there aren't traditional 'hiking trails' with significant elevation changes directly at the monument, you can enjoy pleasant strolls along the Tagus River. Many visitors combine their visit with exploring the nearby Constantino Palha Municipal Garden or other parts of Vila Franca de Xira. For more extensive routes, you can find various walking and cycling paths within the town that pass by the monument and other local landmarks.

As the monument is situated in the town of Vila Franca de Xira, parking is generally available in nearby streets or designated parking areas. Winters (December-February) are mild and wet, requiring a waterproof jacket and layers. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer pleasant temperatures, ideal for exploring, so comfortable walking shoes and adaptable layers are best. The monument is outdoors, so dress according to the forecast.

While the monument itself is the primary landmark, its location along the Tagus River provides scenic views of the river and its banks. The nearby Constantino Palha Municipal Garden offers a pleasant green space. The riverfront area is generally flat, providing open vistas, and you might spot various bird species associated with riverine environments. Is the Cais da Jorna monument accessible for wheelchair users?

Yes, the Cais da Jorna monument is located in a flat, urban riverside area and is considered wheelchair accessible. The surrounding paths are generally paved and level, making it easy for visitors using wheelchairs or those with mobility challenges to approach and appreciate the monument.

What is the historical significance of the 'jornaleiros' honored by the monument?

Farmers or their foremen would arrive by boat to hire labor for the fields of Lezíria or local factories.
