Nel IX secolo d.C. Dvigrad è stata menzionata per la prima volta.
Il boom terminò bruscamente quando Dvigrad fu devastata da guerre e malattie nel corso dei secoli.
Quando scoppiò la malaria nel 17° secolo, solo il 10 per cento circa dei circa 700 abitanti sopravvisse a questa epidemia e di conseguenza lasciò la città.
Della città non resta nulla, ma circa 200 ruderi di case e le rovine della Basilica di Santa Sofia.
