    Domande frequenti

What kind of hiking trails can I expect around Pomena Harbor?

Pomena Harbor serves as a primary gateway to Mljet National Park, offering a variety of trails. You'll find

easy walking paths suitable for leisurely strolls around the lakes, as well as more challenging routes that venture deeper into the island's lush pine forests. Many trails are well-suited for cycling too, with options to rent bikes locally.

Is there public transport available to or from Pomena Harbor?

While Pomena is connected by the D120 highway, public transport options within Mljet can be limited. Many visitors rely on rented scooters or bicycles to explore the island, especially for reaching areas within the National Park. For inter-island travel, ferries and catamarans connect Mljet to the mainland and other islands.

Do I need a permit or ticket to access hiking areas near Pomena Harbor?

Yes, Pomena is a main entry point to Mljet National Park. Accessing the park's core areas, including the famous saltwater lakes and their surrounding trails, typically requires a valid entrance ticket. How crowded does Pomena Harbor get during peak season, and when is the best time to avoid crowds?

Pomena, especially as a National Park gateway, can become quite busy during the peak summer months (July and August) with individual tourists and smaller cruise ships. To experience a more tranquil atmosphere and avoid the largest crowds, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons of late spring (May-June) or early autumn (September-October) when the weather is still pleasant for outdoor activities.

Are there any family-friendly walking routes directly accessible from Pomena Harbor?

Absolutely! Pomena's proximity to Mljet National Park means many family-friendly walks are just a short distance away. You can also rent bicycles to explore these scenic routes together.

Are dogs allowed on hiking trails and in the National Park near Pomena?

Generally, dogs are permitted on most hiking trails in Croatia, including those around Pomena and within Mljet National Park, provided they are kept on a leash. However, specific rules may apply to certain protected areas or facilities, so it's always advisable to check local signage or park regulations upon arrival.

What amenities are available in Pomena Harbor for visitors?

Despite its small size, Pomena offers several convenient amenities. You'll find a small supermarket near the National Park ticket booth, several restaurants and coffee bars, and shops for souvenirs. There are also agencies where you can rent bicycles, e-bikes, or scooters to explore the island.

Where are the best viewpoints in Pomena Harbor for photography, especially sunsets?

Pomena is renowned for its spectacular sunsets. Excellent viewpoints can be found along the harbor promenade, particularly from the area around Hotel Odisej, which is perched right on the bay. The sheltered harbor, with the tiny island of Pomestak in the foreground, provides a picturesque setting for capturing the evening colors over the water.

Can I find accommodation directly in Pomena Harbor?

Yes, Pomena offers accommodation options for visitors. The most prominent is Hotel Odisej, which played a significant role in the village's development as a tourist destination. Additionally, you can find various guesthouses and private apartments available for rent, catering to different preferences and budgets.

What are the typical terrain conditions for hiking around Pomena Harbor and in Mljet National Park?
