    Costruito su un altro precedente datato 1460, e distrutto da una forte piena del fiume nel 1545, l'attuale ponte fu completato nel 1596, essendo il re di Spagna Felipe II, e governatore di Badajoz D. Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. Fino a quella edificata nel XV secolo, la città era sprovvista di ponte, effettuando l'attraversamento del fiume in barca, oppure sfruttando i guadi in tempo praticabile. Quella eretta alla fine del XVI secolo è sostanzialmente la stessa sopravvissuta fino ai nostri giorni, essendo un'opera di carattere herreriano, solidamente realizzata in pietra.
