    Il monastero cistercense Mariensee fu fondato nel XIII secolo. I residenti ad Hannover coltivavano, vendevano i prodotti e così finanziavano la costruzione di una chiesa sacra. Il complesso del monastero fu distrutto dalla guerra e da un grave incendio, inizialmente solo la chiesa sopravvisse. Fu il re Giorgio II a ricostruire finalmente il monastero nello stile del barocco della Germania settentrionale.
