    Il ponte è stato costruito in pietra al posto di un ponte più antico chiamato Sharen Most (Шарен мост, "Ponte eterogeneo") perché era decorato con strisce rosse e gialle. Il nome del Ponte dei Leoni deriva dalle quattro sculture in bronzo di leoni, la sua caratteristica più riconoscibile. Tutti gli elementi metallici del ponte sono stati prodotti dalla società austriaca di Rudolph Philipp Waagner e le luci elettriche sono state installate all'inizio del 1900.
