Embark on a moderate hiking adventure along the Pacific Crest Trail: California Section O, a 10.7 miles (17.3 km) route that takes you through the dense forests of Shasta-Trinity National Forest. This section offers a diverse experience, featuring beautiful waterfalls like the magnificent ones at McArthur Burney Falls Memorial Park and scenic river crossings, including the Footbridge across Burney Creek. You will gain 1233 feet (376 metres) in elevation, and the trail provides clear views of snow-capped Mount Shasta, especially during spring. Expect to complete this journey in approximately 4 hours and 54 minutes, enjoying glimpses of the region's unique volcanic features along the way.
When planning your visit, be aware of seasonal challenges that can impact your hike. Early in the season, typically May through June, you might encounter snow and blowdowns on the trail. Later in the summer, from late June to July, conditions can become very hot and dusty, so prepare accordingly. While permits are generally not required for backpacking within Section O, there are exceptions for areas like Burney Falls and Castle Crags State Parks, so check ahead. Always carry enough water, as some stretches, such as the Hat Creek Rim, have long carries without reliable sources, and Lake Britton is not suitable for drinking.
This segment of the Pacific Crest Trail winds through a rich natural environment, showcasing the unique geology of the area with its volcanic features. It is nestled within McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, a highlight of the region known for its stunning waterfalls. The route offers a chance to immerse yourself in the vastness of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, providing a true wilderness experience. Keep an eye out for the diverse flora and fauna that thrive in this varied landscape, making each step a discovery.
