La regina Adelheid aveva visitato l'isola dopo che Malta divenne parte dell'Impero britannico nel 1814. Poiché non c'era alcun luogo di culto anglicano sull'isola, fece costruire la Pro-Cattedrale di St. Paul per i membri dell'amministrazione coloniale.
