Planning your journey in advance with local bus schedules is recommended.

Are the trails around Rokkestenen and within Paradisbakkerne suitable for families with young children?

Yes, the Paradisbakkerne area offers several marked trails suitable for families. While some sections can be hilly and rocky, there are generally well-maintained paths leading to Rokkestenen. Always check trail conditions and choose routes appropriate for your family's fitness level.

Is Rokkestenen (Rocking Stone) in Paradisbakkerne accessible for visitors with wheelchairs or strollers?

Due to the hilly and rocky terrain of Paradisbakkerne, and the nature of the forest trails, direct wheelchair or stroller access to Rokkestenen itself is generally not feasible. The paths can be uneven and narrow in places. However, some of the main access roads and initial sections of trails might be more manageable, but reaching the stone requires navigating natural forest paths.

Can I bring my dog to Rokkestenen and the Paradisbakkerne trails?

Absolutely! Paradisbakkerne is rich with natural features. Beyond Rokkestenen, you can explore impressive rift valleys like Ravnedal and Dybedal, which feature almost vertical cliffs. The area also contains several small lakes and marshes, and the ancient refuge site of Gamleborg. Many trails offer scenic viewpoints across the varied landscape of the 'hills of paradise'.

What is the geological significance of Rokkestenen?

Rokkestenen is a prime example of a 'glacial erratic' or 'vandreblok', meaning it's a boulder transported and deposited by the massive ice sheets during the last ice age. Its unique geological significance lies in its size (approximately 35 tons) and its peculiar ability to rock due to its specific placement on a stable base, a testament to the powerful forces that shaped Bornholm's landscape.

Are there any facilities like restrooms or cafes available near Rokkestenen?

Paradisbakkerne is a natural reserve, so facilities directly at Rokkestenen are minimal. There are benches and tables near the stone for resting. For restrooms, cafes, or other amenities, you would need to visit the nearby towns of Nexø or Svaneke, which are a short drive away. It's advisable to bring your own water and snacks for your hike.

How long does it typically take to hike to Rokkestenen and back?

The time it takes to hike to Rokkestenen and back depends on your starting point and pace. From the main parking area at Lisegårdsvejen, a round trip to the stone and back can typically take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours, depending on how much you explore and linger. Yes, Rokkestenen can be visited in winter, offering a unique and often tranquil experience. Expect colder temperatures and potentially snow or ice on the trails. While the landscape can be beautiful, some paths might be slippery, so appropriate winter hiking gear, including sturdy, waterproof boots, is essential. Always check local weather conditions before heading out.

Are there any local legends or historical stories associated with Rokkestenen?

Yes, Rokkestenen is steeped in local folklore. One popular legend tells of a troll from Pedersker who attempted to throw the stone at a church tower but missed, landing it in Paradisbakkerne. Another belief suggests the massive stone rests on a diamond. Historically, the stone and its surroundings have been protected since at least 1894, highlighting its long-standing cultural significance.

What is the best way to make the Rokkestenen rock?

The Rokkestenen is known for its ability to gently rock when force is applied in the right spot. Visitors often find success by jumping on a small plateau on one side of the stone. It's a subtle movement, but the sheer size of the stone makes even a slight wobble impressive. Information boards at the site may offer further guidance on how to experience this unique phenomenon.
