What is the historical significance of the 8th-century origins mentioned for Sint-Pieterskerk?

The mention of 8th-century origins refers to the presumed initial construction of a wooden church on the site where the current Sint-Pieterskerk in Leuven now stands. Archaeological excavations during restoration have revealed evidence of a Carolingian wooden hall church from the 8th-9th century, which was later replaced by a stone Romanesque church around the year 1000, and eventually the grand Gothic edifice seen today. This deep history makes it one of the oldest continuously used religious sites in Leuven.
