La chiesa fu costruita nel 1826-1829 sotto la supervisione del Ministero della Gestione delle Acque secondo un progetto degli architetti J. Backx e T.W. Corrado. L'edificio sostituì la chiesa demolita intorno al 1600. Originariamente in questo sito c'era una chiesa medievale che fu bruciata nel 1595, durante la Guerra degli Ottant'anni.
