    Il Moritzbastei è l'unica parte sopravvissuta delle fortificazioni della città di Lipsia.
    Il Moritzbastei fu costruito come bastione sotto la direzione di Hieronymus Lotter negli anni 1551-1554 dopo la distruzione dell'edificio precedente durante la guerra di Smalcalda e prese il nome dal principe elettore Moritz di Sassonia.
    Nel 1974 il Moritzbastei è stato consegnato agli studenti dell'Università Karl Marx di Lipsia. In 150.000 ore di lavoro non retribuito sono stati rimossi circa 40.000 metri cubi di macerie. 30mila studenti hanno lavorato al Moritzbastei durante la fase di costruzione, tra cui la futura cancelliera Angela Merkel.
