    Domande frequenti

Is Carrowmore Megalithic Tombs suitable for visitors with limited mobility or wheelchairs?

While the site features open, grassy paths, some areas can be uneven. The visitor centre is generally accessible, but exploring all the individual tombs across the expansive grounds might present challenges for those with limited mobility or using wheelchairs. It's advisable to contact the visitor centre directly for the most up-to-date accessibility information.

Are dogs allowed at Carrowmore Megalithic Tombs?

Typically, well-behaved dogs on a leash are permitted on the outdoor grounds of Carrowmore Megalithic Tombs. However, they may not be allowed inside the visitor centre or any enclosed structures. Always check for specific signage upon arrival or contact the site directly to confirm their current pet policy.

How long should I plan for a visit to Carrowmore Megalithic Tombs?

To fully appreciate the site and explore the numerous tombs, including the central Listoghil cairn, most visitors find that 1.5 to 2.5 hours is a good amount of time. This allows for walking between monuments, reading information, and visiting the exhibition in the restored cottage. If you opt for a guided tour, the duration might be slightly longer.

What are the parking options at Carrowmore Megalithic Tombs?

There is a dedicated car park available at the Carrowmore Megalithic Tombs visitor centre. User tips suggest that parking can fill up quickly, especially during peak season or on busy weekends. Arriving earlier in the day is recommended to secure a spot.

Are there guided tours available, and how can I book one?

Yes, guided tours are often available and can significantly enhance your understanding of the site's history and mythology. Information regarding tour availability, schedules, and booking can usually be found at the visitor centre upon arrival. For advance booking or to check specific tour times, it's best to consult the official website or contact the site directly.

What kind of terrain and difficulty can I expect when exploring the tombs?

The site consists of open, grassy fields with numerous ancient monuments scattered across them. The terrain is generally flat but can be uneven in places, with some gentle slopes. It is considered an easy walk, suitable for most fitness levels, but sturdy footwear is highly recommended for comfort and stability, especially after rain.

What facilities are available at the visitor centre?

The restored cottage at Carrowmore serves as a visitor centre, housing an exhibition that provides essential historical context and information about the site. It's a great starting point for your visit. Facilities typically include restrooms and possibly a small shop. It's always a good idea to check if the visitor centre is open before your visit, as mentioned in user tips.

Can I reach Carrowmore Megalithic Tombs by public transport?

While Carrowmore is located about 5 kilometers from Sligo Town, direct public transport options to the site itself are limited. Visitors typically reach the site by car, taxi, or by cycling from Sligo Town. It's advisable to check local bus schedules for routes that might pass nearby, but a final walk or taxi ride may still be required.

What should I wear when visiting Carrowmore Megalithic Tombs?

Given the open, exposed nature of the site, it's best to dress in layers to account for changing weather conditions. Sturdy, comfortable footwear is essential for walking across the grassy and potentially uneven terrain. A waterproof jacket is also recommended, as Irish weather can be unpredictable, even on sunny days.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options nearby?

Carrowmore Megalithic Tombs is situated in a rural area, so immediate options for cafes, pubs, or accommodation are limited. Sligo Town, approximately 5 kilometers away, offers a wide range of choices for dining, pubs, and various types of accommodation, from hotels to guesthouses. It's recommended to plan your meals and stays in Sligo Town or other nearby villages.
