The Naturschutzgebiet Süggel is an ancient and extensive forest area located in the northern part of Dortmund, Germany. Situated at an elevation of approximately 102 metres, this significant natural "island biotope" borders the city districts of Eving and Kemminghausen, and lies east of Bundesstraße 54. It forms a crucial green lung within the urban environment, connecting with the adjacent Grävingholz nature reserve.

Visitors consistently praise the Süggel for its tranquil atmosphere and the opportunity to immerse themselves in a well-preserved natural landscape. The forest's rich history as a medieval hunting ground, rather than an economically exploited area, has allowed its natural tree population to thrive for centuries. This historical preservation contributes to the unique charm and ecological value that hikers and nature lovers appreciate.

Exploring the Naturschutzgebiet Süggel is made easy by its well-maintained network of hiking and cycling trails, which are generally considered easy and suitable for all fitness levels. While the forest has experienced natural events, such as the impact of storm Frederike which uprooted many trees, these changes are part of its dynamic ecosystem. Visitors can also discover natural and narrow paths, including one that leads past a rain retention basin.

The Süggel forest offers an enriching experience throughout the year, with autumn walks being particularly popular for enjoying the vibrant deciduous foliage. It's an ideal destination for family friendly walks, wildlife observation, and simply enjoying the outdoors. The diverse flora and fauna, including various bird species and amphibians, make every visit a chance for discovery.

A standout feature of the Naturschutzgebiet Süggel is its diverse wildlife, particularly the deer enclosure where visitors can observe fallow deer in a near-wild setting, often from an observation platform. The forest is also characterized by numerous small spring-fed streams, such as the Süggelbach, which create marshy wetlands. These wetlands support specific plant life like sedges and lady fern, and provide essential habitats for amphibians like newts and common toads, making it a true haven for wildlife enthusiasts.

Whether you're looking for a leisurely stroll or a longer exploration, the Naturschutzgebiet Süggel forest trails routes offer a variety of options. You can discover the best hikes near Süggel forest and plan your adventure using komoot, which provides detailed maps and route suggestions for hikers and cyclists alike. With its ancient trees and abundant wildlife, the Süggel provides a refreshing escape into nature.

    Escursionismo
