    Il canale cittadino o Handzamevaart è stato per lungo tempo il confine tra il primo nucleo urbano. Nel XIII secolo gli artigiani occuparono le terre più basse a nord del centro cittadino. Il canale divenne un trafficato porto interno, di cui troviamo ancora tracce del muro della banchina con anelli di ormeggio e scale di carico e scarico al Vismarkt.
