    Il villaggio di Hoek van Holland, come sub-comune di Rotterdam noto anche come "Rotterdam aan Zee", è stato creato solo durante la costruzione del Nieuwe Waterweg. Il sito dell'attuale "Zuidelijk Strandcentrum" era la caserma dei lavoratori della terra che eseguivano i lavori di scavo per il canale. Dopo il suo completamento nel 1872, continuarono a vivere nel loro campo originario e trovarono lavoro nell'orticoltura o fornirono manodopera pesante e non qualificata per la costruzione del porto.
