    Il "Borch to Assen", che esisteva già nell'XI secolo, apparteneva all'Amtshof Honsel an der Lippe, che l'imperatore Enrico II donò al monastero di Abdinghof a Paderborn nel 1023. Nel 1384 Röttger ricevette il castello in feudo da Ketteler. La proprietà fu divisa nel 1455. Nel 1564 Laurenz von Brachum costruì la casa Neu-Assen a sud del castello per conto di Goswin von Ketteler; suo fratello viveva nel vecchio castello.
