La strada, che inizia a nord a Vestre Stationsvej e termina a sud nella seconda strada pedonale più lunga della città, Vestergade, ospita numerosi negozi, ristoranti e caffè, oltre a Fyns Forsamlinghus.
La strada fu costruita nel 1847. Le prime case di Kongensgade erano destinate all'edilizia abitativa, ma verso la fine del XIX secolo la strada si trasformò gradualmente in una strada commerciale. Quando c'erano i tram a Odense, una delle linee principali andava dalla stazione via Kongensgade a Fruens Bøge. Le operazioni di tram furono interrotte nel 1952.
