    Il santuario è in stile barocco con influenze dal classicismo. Il primo documento scritto che rimane del tempio è dell'anno 1544. La cappella fu più volte ricostruita, fino a quando quella attuale fu edificata all'inizio del 1700, nel 1719, grazie alla donazione dei Conti di Maceda, la cui ceneri si trovano in alcune tombe all'interno del santuario.

    La sera del 25 dicembre 2013 un incendio a seguito di un fulmine durante il temporale natalizio ha distrutto la capriata del tetto e parte del Santuario da Nosa Senora da Barca (Santuario della Fanciulla della Nave). La chiesa è un importante luogo di pellegrinaggio in Galizia e un'altra meta di molti pellegrini dopo aver raggiunto Santiago de Compostela.
