    All'estremità orientale dell'Engelsgarten, vicino al teatro dell'opera, sorgeva la casa natale di Friedrich Engels, dove vide la luce il 28 novembre 1820. Fu distrutto durante la seconda guerra mondiale, quindi il sindaco Herberts inaugurò la lapide il 5 agosto 1958, 63 anni dopo la morte di Engel. Durante la Guerra Fredda, erigere una lapide commemorativa per il coautore del Manifesto del Partito Comunista non fu senza polemiche. Solo otto voti a favore dell'establishment con sette astensioni.
