    Il ponte ferroviario originale, costituito da due file di archi uno sopra l'altro, fu fatto saltare in aria dall'esercito belga il 10 maggio 1940 durante la Blitzkrieg nel tentativo di fermare l'avanzata dell'esercito nemico. I soldati coinvolti sono stati uccisi. Una targa commemorativa sul retro dei resti del vecchio molo del ponte commemora questo evento.
