Embark on a moderate hike through the Peak District National Park with the Stanage & Higger Tor loop from Hathersage. This 6.9-mile (11.2 km) route features a diverse landscape, from paths through fields and woodlands to open moorland with rocky gritstone outcrops. You will gain about 1079 feet (329 metres) in elevation over approximately 3 hours and 19 minutes, encountering varied terrain that includes rocky sections and potentially boggy ground after rain. From Stanage Edge, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Hope and Derwent Valleys, while Higger Tor offers impressive vistas over the Burbage Valley.
Starting from Hathersage, a village with amenities like pubs and cafes, this trail requires a good level of fitness due to its challenging sections and significant elevation changes. Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended for the uneven and rocky ground. While the trail is accessible year-round, be prepared for potentially slippery conditions on rocky paths and boggy areas, especially after wet weather.
This loop is notable for its iconic gritstone escarpment, Stanage Edge, a popular spot for climbers and a filming location for "Pride & Prejudice." You will also pass the distinctive Higger Tor, known for its 360-degree views and interesting rock formations.
