L'edificio fu eretto nel 1952 al posto della vecchia chiesa a sala gotica distrutta.
La prima chiesa a Dorsten fu fondata nell'XI secolo dal monastero di Xanten, che ebbe anche il diritto di ricoprire la carica di pastore fino al 1721. Inizialmente la chiesa (congregazione) apparteneva all'arcidiocesi di Colonia e solo dal 1821 alla diocesi di Münster.
