Buckfast Abbey is an active Benedictine monastery located in the picturesque village of Buckfast, near Buckfastleigh, Devon, England. Nestled in a tranquil valley on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, this significant religious building stands at an elevation of approximately 40 metres. It is renowned for its remarkable history, having been first founded in 1018, dissolved in 1539, and then spectacularly refounded by French Benedictine monks in 1882, with the current Abbey Church largely rebuilt on its medieval foundations.

    Sebbene la prima abbazia di Buckfast sia stata costruita qui nel 1018, da allora sono avvenute molte demolizioni e costruzioni e l'abbazia che si trova oggi nel villaggio è stata effettivamente costruita all'inizio del 1900.

    L'abbazia è un monastero benedettino funzionante e, sorprendentemente, è autosufficiente con una piccola fattoria e un negozio. Questa è anche la patria del Buckfast Tonic Wine, una bevanda alcolica unica con una notevole caffeina.

    L'abbazia merita una visita in quanto ha un'impressionante collezione di edifici ed è situata in un parco incantevoli.

    La chiesa in stile neoromanico è costruita in pietra calcarea grigia e pietra gialla di Ham Hill. L'interno è in pietra bianca di Bath e la volta si eleva per 15 m sopra la navata. L'altare maggiore è decorato con oro, gioielli smaltati e la cappella del sacramento (1966) ha bellissime vetrate colorate.
