The Fahrenberg has a rich history dating back to the 12th century when a castle stood on the site, later passing to the Knights Templar around 1200. Oral tradition suggests a Templar brought a statue of the Virgin Mary from the Holy Land in 1204, initiating the pilgrimage. The current Baroque church was rebuilt in 1779 after a fire, and it houses a late Gothic carved statue of the Virgin Mary, considered a miraculous image.
Absolutely. Inside, you'll find a magnificent Baroque high altar from 1796, featuring the revered late Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus. The massive pulpit, adorned with Rococo motifs and crowned by St. Michael the Archangel, is also notable. Don't miss the six larger-than-life figures of biblical patriarchs and prophets standing on pedestals in the nave and sanctuary.
On the east gable of the church stands a copper-chased and gilded statue of the Madonna of Peace, consecrated in 1956. Its gaze is symbolically directed towards the former border that divided Europe until 1990, representing hope and unity. The statue was restored and returned to its position in 2003 after its support was damaged, and a memorial plaque commemorates its donors.
Public transport options directly to the Pilgrimage Church Fahrenberg are generally limited. Visitors typically reach the church by car or as part of a hike. It's advisable to plan your journey in advance and consider driving to a nearby parking area before continuing on foot.
