    Non è possibile determinare con precisione l'erezione della prima chiesa, dedicata a San Martino, patrono dei Franchi. Probabilmente fu costruito nel IX secolo. Intorno all'anno 1110, i benedettini dell'abbazia di Michaelsberg a Siegburg fondarono un prevosto a Remagen su iniziativa e con il grande sostegno del popolo di Remagen. Nel XIII secolo furono probabilmente ritrovate sul monte le reliquie di Sant'Apollinare. La prima menzione scritta del santo a Remagen risale al 1295. Il sarcofago con la reliquia principale nella cripta della chiesa risale al XIV secolo.
