    La fondazione della prima comunità cristiana e la costruzione della prima chiesa a Usseln avvennero nel primo periodo missionario (intorno all'800). La chiesa, che è stata per secoli la chiesa madre dell'Altopiano, è dedicata a San Kilian ed è protestante dal 1529.

    La chiesa, ampliata in una basilica a tre navate nel XIII secolo, fu distrutta da un incendio nel 1642 fino al presbiterio romanico-gotico e fu ricostruita dopo la Guerra dei Trent'anni. Dal 1896 al 1898 ebbe luogo una conversione fondamentale.
