Una mappa del XVI secolo mostra già due fattorie con fossato: la Fattoria De Bocht e l'antica fortezza in pietra Steendere, che alcuni ritengono addirittura risalga all'epoca romana. I resti di quest'ultima sono riconoscibili come un grande specchio d'acqua appena dietro il Rupeldijk.
