    Durante un'alluvione del 6 aprile 1808, il ponte crollò. Con l'aiuto di pionieri francesi, gli artigiani locali riuscirono a costruire in tempo un ponte di legno provvisorio sui resti dei pilastri del ponte, in modo che il collegamento potesse essere riaperto nel maggio 1808.
    Da quel momento il ponte è stato chiamato il ponte francese. Da un lato, perché nella ricostruzione furono coinvolte le truppe francesi e, dall'altro, perché davanti al ponte c'era un corpo di guardia francese, che era stato costruito a protezione del ponte e al quale doveva essere pagato un pedaggio passanti.
