    La piazza prende il nome dal Trattato di pace di Oliva (firmato nel 1660 presso il monastero di Oliva in Pomerania; oggi Oliva è un distretto di Danzica). Per prima cosa, questo trattato pose fine alla partecipazione di successo del Brandeburgo alla seconda guerra del Nord; in seguito si rivelò ancora più importante che confermò la sovranità del ducato degli Hohenzollern e gettò così le basi per il successivo Regno di Prussia. Nell'area intorno al Kurfürstendamm fino all'Hohenzollerndamm, le strade hanno ricevuto nomi di persone ed eventi della storia della Casa degli Hohenzollern.
