Il ventaglio di basalto è stato scoperto da lavori di cava. I pilastri di basalto, che stavano diventando sempre più visibili nel corso dell'attività di cava, facevano emergere l'idea di una protezione meritevole già alla fine dell'ottocento. Nelle trattative con i proprietari è stato effettuato un premuroso smantellamento della roccia, in modo da preservare aree geologicamente significative.
L'affioramento dell'Hirtstein è stato valutato nel maggio 2006 dall'Accademia di Geoscienze di Hannover come uno dei 77 geotopi nazionali più importanti della Germania. L'Hirtstein è un monumento naturale e un punto panoramico.
