The Mishe Mokwa and Sandstone Peak Loop offers a fantastic journey through the Santa Monica Mountains, showcasing a rugged wilderness feel with stony outcrops and impressive canyons. You'll traverse varied terrain, from chaparral to volcanic rock, with highlights like the dramatic Echo Cliffs and the precariously perched Balanced Rock. The route culminates at Sandstone Peak, the highest point in the range, where you're treated to sweeping 360-degree views of the Pacific and valleys.
This moderate 7.3-mile (11.7 km) hike involves 1333 feet (406 metres) of elevation gain, taking approximately 3 hours and 31 minutes to complete. Parking is free at either the Sandstone Peak or Mishe Mokwa trailheads, making access straightforward. Given the trail's exposed sections, especially on the climb, it's best to start early on warmer days and bring ample water.
Beyond its stunning vistas, this loop is notable for being one of the best dog-friendly trails in the Santa Monica Mountains, allowing your furry friends to join the adventure. It's part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, the world's largest urban national park, offering a diverse ecosystem and unique geological formations like Split Rock.
