Questi erano sempre all'ingresso del castello o della masseria e avevano lo scopo di indicare la ricchezza del proprietario attraverso la loro dimensione e design. I piccioni erano usati come fonte di cibo e gli escrementi venivano venduti a caro prezzo come fertilizzante per i campi di grano, poiché non c'era altro fertilizzante per migliorare il terreno povero per la semina del mais.
