    Il castello fu fondato probabilmente nel XII secolo come fortificazione e fu il punto di partenza dell'insediamento di Schwarzenberg e dei dintorni. L'antico castello ricevette la sua forma attuale grazie alla trasformazione in residenza di caccia elettorale sassone dal 1555 al 1558 per il principe elettore Augusto di Sassonia. Nel 1851/52 furono rialzati il mastio e l'ala sud, nel 1875/76 fu aggiunto un edificio amministrativo.
