Nel 2006, l'amministrazione comunale di Aquisgrana ha commissionato un concorso per ridisegnare l'Elisengarten.
In vista della riprogettazione, dall'agosto 2008 al febbraio 2009 sono stati effettuati ampi scavi archeologici. Sono stati dimostrati insediamenti e siti di artigianato di cinque millenni.
Una vetrina archeologica di 160 m², progettata dagli architetti di Aquisgrana 'kadawittfeldarchitektur', rende permanentemente visibile una parte rappresentativa degli scavi di 60 m².
