    Dalle rovine dell'antico castello di Mérindol e del suo antico villaggio, si può ammirare l'attuale villaggio e godere di una splendida vista. Queste rovine possono sembrare insignificanti, ma qui si verificarono due tragedie. La grande epidemia di peste devastò la Provenza e, nel 1448, Mérindol-le-Vieux fu completamente decimata.

    Nel 1504, gli abitanti delle Alpi provenzali si stabilirono in questa zona. Ebbero la sfortuna di praticare la Chiesa Evangelica Valdese e furono in gran parte massacrati nel 1545 per ordine reale. Questo tragico episodio divenne noto come il "Sacco di Mérindol".
