Ohori significa fossato in giapponese e lo stagno al centro del parco un tempo faceva parte del sistema di fossati del vicino castello di Fukuoka. Il parco fu costruito tra il 1926 e il 1929. Al centro dello stagno ci sono tre isole collegate da eleganti ponti in pietra.
