The region around Les Eyzies is considered one of the cultural centers of prehistory; Groups of hunters and gatherers roamed the Vézère Valley, even temporarily settling under some overhanging abrisks. In 1905, the former municipality Tayac was renamed Les Eyzies-de-Tayac.
