Laid out in the Renaissance style in 1570, the Herrengarten of the Hofburg was originally reserved for the Brixen clergy for rest and relaxation.
It was not opened to the public until 1992. Two years of renovation work preceded the opening of the Herrengarten, during which it was reconstructed according to an old plan from 1831. Only the former arcade, the orangery and the summer house could no longer be rebuilt.

Once reserved for the clergy, it has always been a place of retreat and contemplation.
The Prince-Bishop's Hofburg Garden looks back on a long and rich history: first documented in the mid-13th century, it is not only one of the few remaining orchards but is also probably the oldest historically documented arboretum on the continent.
