The lead mines of Mechernich are drained underground. Here you can see the wastewater shortly before it flows into the Veybach stream – full of toxins. And yet, beneath the swaying branches of a willow tree, it looks quite idyllic.

At this point, the Burgfeyer Tunnel emerges into the daylight after a seven-kilometer journey beneath five old lead mines. After a short stretch in the open, it flows into the Veybach stream.

Since 1875, the Burgfeyer Tunnel has collected the mine water from all the lead mines. As a result, it is contaminated with lead, nickel, cadmium, and arsenic. The largest pit was later filled with household waste, adding further toxins. Fifty tons of heavy metals flow from the tunnel into the Veybach and ultimately into the Rhine River each year.
