The Scheidtweiler couple, who run a farmstead in Wachendorf, commissioned the renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor to build the chapel. Mr. Scheidtweiler had written to the architect, describing his project as an expression of gratitude for a fulfilling life. Zumthor then agreed to undertake the project.
The chapel was built on a framework of wooden planks, similar to a teepee, and filled with rammed concrete. After construction was completed, the wooden framework was burned from the inside. This created the unique shape of the ceiling, and for the first few years, the smell of the burning was always noticeable.

The way to the chapel is already part of a special experience, you shouldn't shorten it.
If you want to experience this field chapel for yourself and in silence, it is good to visit it if the weather does not necessarily invite you to hike and during the week instead of the weekend.
The chapel is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in summer, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in winter.

It has no windows. Light falls from above through the open ceiling and through the small, light-filled glass holes in the walls.
